Pierre Melancon dit La Verdure1,2
M, b. 1632, d. after 1714
| Religion* | | protestant4 |
| Anecdote | | There are very few families where nationality and religion played such a critical part of its history as it is with the Melanson/Melançon. In Louisiana and perhaps elsewhere, it is considered an "old" French name. In fact, it is not French, but rather a "Gallicized" version of the English name, Mellison. The story begins with the fall of LaRochelle in 1628 when the Calvinists were forced to leave France. One of these Calvinists was Pierre Laverdure. He went to England and married Priscilla Mellison in 1630. They had three sons, Pierre, Charles, and John. In 1657 the entire family boarded the vessel "Satisfaction" under the command of Peter Butler. They formed part of the company which Thomas Temple, the new Governor of English Nova Scotia, was transporting to Acadia. Pierre and Priscilla settled in Acadia. Two of their sons married into the French Acadian families already there. England ceded Acadia back to France in 1667 in the Treaty of Breda. Pierre, his wife, and youngest son, John left for Boston, seeking refuge in Protestant New England "from the wrath of his Countrymen Papists, at Johns fort and thereabouts." The two older Melanson sons remained in Acadia after 1667. The elder Pierre had to leave all his property in Acadia when he left for Boston, and thus was forced to live in extreme poverty. His son, John, was the only support for the family. John quickly ran into problems of his own. In late 1676, he and Henry Lawton tricked some Indians from near Cape Sable, Acadia onto a vessel so they could sell them as slaves on Fayal Island. Seventeen Indians, men, women, and children were involved. This behavior was illegal, and they were arrested. John was granted temporary leave (bail) for 100 pounds supplied by Samuel Sendall, whom his mother referred to as her landlord. John never made it to trial and disappeared. His father, Pierre Laverdure searched for him as far as Acadia but never found him. The journeys weakened the elderly Pierre, and he died in 1677. His widow, Priscilla, was obligated to repay the 100 pounds to her landlord and came to depend on public charity. She married Captain William Wright, an innkeeper from Dorchester, Massachusetts on April 8, 1680 . Priscilla had sent for a granddaughter still living in Acadia, Marie Melanson.. Marie was the daughter of her son, Charles, who had married an Acadian and remained in Acadia. She raised Marie in the Protestant religion in Massachusetts. Her son sent his daughter to Massachusetts along with a loan of 40 pounds upon a promise that Marie would get all of Priscilla's household belongings upon her death. Priscilla's belongings were inventoried, and this inventory can be found in the Mass. archives (Vol. 37). Marie eventually married David Basset. It appears that when Priscilla died in late 1691 or 1692, while in her early nineties, Captain Wright wanted to keep the pots and pans only to be sued by the granddaughter, Marie. The suit was presumably settled out of court. Meanwhile, the two "Catholic sons" were raising their families in Acadia. The oldest of the two sons who remained in Acadia was Pierre. He was born in or around 1632 and married Marie Marguerite Anne Mius d'Entremont at Port Royal in 1665. He apparently remained in contact with Boston, because he borrowed 3000 pounds from his nephew-in-law, David Basset. Pierre had 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys. |
| Misc | | Many a writer has tried to explain the origins of this family. It was generally believed that the Melanson were of Scottish origin, but this assumption was based on a historic mistake. There is no document that demonstrates that the Melansons who came to Acadia were of Scottish decent, in fact to the contrary there is proof that they were of English decent. The two Melanson brothers, PIERRE, dit Laverdure, a stonemason, born in 1632, the spouse of Marie Marguerite Muis d'Entremont, the daughter of the Lord of Pomcoup, Philippe Mius d 'Entremont, and CHARLES, born in 1643, the husband of Marie Dugas, daughter of Armourer Abraham Dugas and Marguerite Doucet of Port Royal, arrived in Port Royal accompanied their parents aboard the ship the Satisfaction, with Sir Thomas Temple, the new English Governor of Acadia, which arrived in 1657. During almost a century, just until the deportation of the Acadians in 1755, the settlement was the place of residence of Charles Melanson and his wife Marie Dugas, and their descendents and associates. "The Melanson Settlement" is one of the principle Canadian archeological sites illustrating the way of rural life in Acadia in the 17th and 18th centuries.5 |

| Telephone | | One Melançon of particular interest to Louisiana is the third son of Pierre and Marie Marguerite Anne Mius d'Entremont, Jean-Dominique. Several of his descendants are known to have made their way to Louisiana after the deportation. Jean-Dominique and his wife, Marie-Margeurite Dugas, had ten children, six boys and four girls. It is known that at least four of the sons of Jean-Dominique or some of their descendants made it to Louisiana.Their oldest son was named Jean-Baptiste and was born in 1706 and married around 1728 to Marie-Madeleine LeBlanc of Grand-Pré. Jean-Baptiste was deported to Maryland and died there in 1763, however his wife and at least five of his eleven children made it to Louisiana. The five known to have made it to Louisiana all settled along the Mississippi River in St. James or Ascension Parishes. They were Paul Honoré (b. 1730, m. 1750 Marie Thériault), Osite Anne (b. 1732, m. 1752 Jean-Pierre LeBlanc, m.1776 Jean-Baptiste Bourgeois), Jean-Baptiste (b.1736, m. 1768 Marguerite Osite Dupuis, m. 1787 Anne- Agnes Babin), Charles Honoré (b. 1738), Charles (b. 1742, m. 1768 Félicité Landry) and Marie-Rose (b. 1745, m. 1768 Isaac LeBlanc). At least one source says that Jean-Dominique`s son, Pierre, died in 1759 in Louisiana, but that is before the period of the first major Acadian migration into Louisiana, so it should be doubted unless his date of death is actually later than 1759. However, at least two of his children, Marguerite (b. 1747, m. 1767 Amand Landry) and Joseph (b. 1756, m. 1779 Marguerite Gertrude Landry) came to Louisiana. Alexandre Melancon and his family were deported to Maryland by the English. Alexandre died either in Maryland or en route to Louisiana. His second wife, Marie-Osite Hébert, and six of his seven children with her, all came to Louisiana and settled in St. James or Ascension Parishes. They were Madeleine Marie (b. 1749, m. 1768 Jean-Baptiste Gaudin), Pierre Jacques (1753, m. 1773 Isabelle Élisabeth Landry, m. 1817 Marie- Christine Landry), Joseph (b. 1754, m. 1779 Anastasie Breaux, m. 1784 Marie-Josephe LeBlanc), Etienne (b. 1756, m. 1780 Ludivine Breaux), Paul Olivier (b. 1762, m. 1785 Osite Barbe LeBlanc, m. 1821 Marie Broussard), Charles (b. 1764, m.1787 Françoise Arsenault, m. 1790 Marie-Clare Breaux, m. 1803 Scholastique Bourgeois). Jacques Melancon, another of Jean-Dominique`s sons, also died in Maryland, but all three of his daughters made their way to Louisiana with their families and Jacques` widow, Marguerite Broussard. One of Jean-Dominique's brothers, the youngest by the name of Paul-Pierre, actually came to Louisiana at an old age and died in 1774 in Ascension Parish. Paul-Pierre had been one of the Acadian founders of the Acadian settlements at the Bassin des Mines, including Grand Pré. One of Paul-Pierre's daughters, Marie-Rose (b. 1710, m. 1732 Joseph Augustin Bergeron), had children who came to Louisiana and settled in the St. Martinville area. The widow of another of Paul-Pierre's sons, Paul-Honoré (b.1724, m. 1750 Marie-Josephe Breau), came to Louisiana with their four children, Marie-Blanche (b. 1753, m. 1776 Pierre Zéphirin Joseph Broussard), Jean-Baptiste (b. 1756, m. ca. 1785 Marguerite Bergeron), Anastasie (b. 1760, m. 1778 Joseph Babin) and Jean-Dominique (b. 1762, m. 1789 Rose Lucie Doiron). Paul-Honoré and Marie-Josephe lived first at Grande Pré. By 1753 they had moved to the Chipoudy region of what is now New Brunswick in a settlement known as Pointe-aux-renards and Village-à-Honoré (Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick). They were joined there by Paul-Honoré's parents, Paul-Pierre and Marie-Catherine Thériault. Later, as exiles during the dispersion of Acadians by the English, they lived in Snowhill, Maryland. From Maryland, they came to Louisiana where they settled at St. James on the Mississippi River. Honoré died before 1766, as Marie-Josephe is listed as a widow in the St. James, Donaldsonville census taken that year. This record also states that her children were living with her. She is listed again in the St. James/Donaldsonville/Convent census of 1769. At this time she and her children occupied lot #15 on the East side of the Mississippi River at St. James. The widow Melançon died at Donaldsonville in Ascension Parish, but her children moved west and settled at St. Martinville. Most of the grandchildren remained in that area, but at least one of the sons of Jean-Dominique, Marcelin-Louis (b. 1792, m. 1813 Scholastique Guidry, m. 1824 Eulalie Lamorandier) moved to Opelousas. His children in turn spread across St. Landry and St. Martin parishes. Two grandsons of Philippe-Charles, Joseph (b. ca. 1720, m. ca. 1746 Anne Bourg, m. 1761 Ursule Hébert) and Amand (b. 1728, m. 1755 Anne-Marie Babin) settled near St. Gabriel in Iberville Parish. Joseph had been deported to France and came to Louisiana with his second wife in 1785 from Nantes aboard the ship, Ville d'archange. Amand and his family were deported to Maryland and came to Louisiana in 1767. They were the sons of Joseph Melançon and the great-grandchildren of Pierre Melanson and Marie Marguerite Anne Mius d'Entremont. Today, Melanson or Melançon, as the name is most commonly spelled in Louisiana is a common Acadian name. Members of the family are found throughout south Louisiana as well as New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Québec and New England. The Melançon family will be one of the seventy plus Acadian families to hold a family reunion during Congrès mondial acadien-Louisiane 1999. The Melançon family reunion will be held August 13-14, 1999 at Opélousas. | Telephone* | | The six girls were Cecile (b. 1668, m. 1687 Jean Landry), Marie-Madeleine (b. 1673, m. 1694 Germain Landry), Marguerite (b.1676, m. 1694 Alexandre dit Bellehumeur Bourque, m. ca. 1704 Jean-Baptiste Belliveau), Isabelle-Élisabeth (b. 1679, m. ca. 1700 Pierre Alain Bujold, m. 1709 René LeBlanc), Madeleine Catherine (b. ca. 1683, m. 1702 Louis Simon de St.-Aubin) and Anne- Marie (b. 1686, m. 1705 Thomas Jacques Jacob). The four boys were Philippe Charles (b. 1666, m. 1695 Catherine Marie Dugas), Pierre (b. 1670, m. 1693 Marie Rosalie Blanchard), Jean-Dominique (b. 1681, m. ca. 1700 Marie-Marguerite Dugas) and Paul-Pierre (b. 1686, m. 1712 Marie-Catherine Thériault). When the census taker passed by in1671, Pierre Melanson, the tailor, refused to give his age, the number of his livestock and lands, and his wife responded "If crazy for running the streets for the same things". The other son of Pierre and Priscilla was Charles Melanson. He was born sometime around 1643 and married Marie Dugas, the daughter of Abraham Dugas and Marguerite Doucet. They had 14 children, nine girls and five boys. The nine girls were Marie (b. 1664, m. 1682 David Basset), Margeurite (b.1666), Anne-Marie (b.ca 1668, m. 1684 Jacques Saint-Etienne de la Tour, m. 1700 Alexandre Robichaud), Cécile (b. 1670, m. 1684 Abraham Boudrot, m. 1703 Jean-Antoine Belliveau), Françoise (b. 1672, m. 1698 Jean- Baptiste Cyr), Isabelle Élise (b. 1673, m. 1689 Michel Bourque), Marie-Madeleine (b. 1677, m. 1699 Jean-Charles dit LeJeune Belliveau), Marie (b. 1679, m. 1699 Charles Belliveau) and Marguerite Madeleine (b. 1692, m. ca. 1712 Jean-Baptiste Landry). The five boys were Charles (b. 1675, m. 1701 Anne Bourque), Ambroise (b. 1685, m. 1705 Françoise Bourque, m. ca. 1718 Marguerite Comeau), Pierre (b. 1685, m. 1712 Anne Granger), Claude (b. 1688, m. ca. 1712 Marguerite Babineau) and Jean dit Jani (b. 1690, m. ca. 1713 Madeleine Petitot St-Seine). The same census taker that Pierre refused to acknowledge showed Charles Melanson, labourer, as 28 years old, his wife Marie Dugast, age of 23, four children , Marie age of 7 years, Marguerite 5, Anne 3, Cecile 6 month, their livestock consisted of 40 heads of cattle and 6 sheep, and 20 arpents of workable land. In 1671, Charles Melenson was among the largest land holders in Port Royal. By 1698, he owned 35 arpents of land and one of the biggest orchards with 76 fruit trees. His livestock numbered consisted of bulls and cows, 23 sheep and 19 pigs. The settlement of Charles Melanson was situated on the river north strand of the Rivière Dauphin (Annapolis River today), about 6.5 kilometers from the village of Port Royal. Like a number of Acadian settlements it was on high ground, bordering a low salty plateau and the river. To the east, extended the large swamp of Saint Charles, drained and dotted by dikes to allow growing of crops. It remained in the hands of his descendants until the time of the deportation in 1755. An Acadian farm in the 18th century produced a lot of grain: wheat, oats, buck wheat, Indian wheat, peas, hemp, and flax. It had it also produced an abundance of cabbages, beets, onions, turnips as well as other vegetables. The Acadians also knew how to grow potatoes, apples, pears, cherries and grapes in large numbers. Charles Melanson died about 1700. His widow Marie Dugas survived him by nearly forty years and died on July 7, 1737 at the age of about 91 years. She was buried the next day in the Parish cemetery at Port Royal. |

Pierre Morin dit Boucher1
M, b. circa 1634, d. circa 1690
