Roger de Mortimer received all his father's lands (except those wherehis mother Gladuse was endowed). He was Captain General of all theking's forces in Wales, but was overpowered by Llewelin, but owning toconsanguinity--he being Lewellin's nephew he was allowed to return tohis castle. After accession of Edward I, he continued in royal favor.He married Maud, daughter and heir of William de Braose of Brecknock.He had several sons and when he died in 1282 was succeeded by hiseldest surviving son, Edmund. He was the sixth Baron de Mortimer of Wigmore, he was knighted in June1253 by the King at Winchester. He served in Gascony in 1253-1254. Inthe disputes between the King and the Barons in 1258 he at first tookthe Baron's side and was one of the twelve chosen by them to act withtwelve chosen by the King. On June 11, 1259, he was appointed one ofthe commissioners to demand satisfaction from Llewelyn for breaches ofthe true. In 1262 and 1263 he was fighting against Llewelyn (hiscousin) with varying degrees of success. In September 1264 Roger, asconstable of Cardigan, was ordered to give up the castle to Guy deBrien, Montfort's nominee. The Lords of March again broke the trucewith Llewelyn, but by late December Montfort and Llewelyn had overcomethem and Roger and the others were banished to Ireland for a year, butdid not go. At Evesham, August 4, 1265, Roger commanded the rearguardand after Montfort's death his head was sent to Roger's wife.(Complete Peerage, Vol IX, p. 277-80)¹
