| Note* | | FROM Britannia Internet Magazine, www.britannia.com, Internet. Arviragus A personage who has come to our attention, first, in the writings of Juvenal, who mentions him in connection with resistance to Roman conquest and authority. Geoffrey of Monmouth refers to him as a British king whose brother was killed sometime during Claudius' invasion (43 AD). He has been linked with Caratacus, but more interestingly, he is said by the interpolators of William of Malmesbury's 'De Antiquitate Glastoniensis Ecclesiae' to be the king who granted 12 hides of land around Glastonbury to Joseph of Arimathea and his band of followers, when they brought Christianity to Britain for the first time in 63 AD. Some scholars think that it may have been Arviragus and his people who occupied the ancient hillfort, located in the county of Somerset, known as Cadbury Castle (which would later come to be associated with King Arthur), and used it as a base for their resistance against the Romans.1 |

Caractacus Caradoc ap Cunabelin , King of Dumnonia1
M, b. ABT 0035, d. 0054
| Nickname | | King of the Catuvellauni (?)1 |
| Birth* | ABT 0035 | Britain1 |
| Death* | 0054 | 1 |
| Note* | | Trusted advisor of Eudaf Hen of Gwent. Dumnonia This large and well-founded kingdom took in all of Cornwall (Cornubia), Devon, and much of Somerset. Its original capital would have been Isca (Exeter), but archaeology confirms that this was abandoned in the 5th century, and, given the advances of the West Saxons, the capital would continually have been relocated to the west. The main part of Dumnonia in modern Devon (the Defnas Britons) fell to Wessex between 650-670, while the Cornish remnant was independent until 825-829. Although under Roman control until the late 4th century, the Celtic tribe of the Dumnonii probably exercised a certain amount of self-government in their own lands. They most probably established their kingdom as a power in its own right by the time of Magnus Maximus, as the latter prepared Britain's defences prior to establishing his own claim for control of the Roman Empire in AD 383, and Dumnonia was fully independent by 410. -------------------------------------------------- FROM: Encyclopedia Britannica, www.britannica.com, Internet. Caratacus fl. 1st century AD also spelled CARACTACUS, CELTIC CARADOC, king of the British tribe of Trinovantes, and the son of Cunobelinus. Caratacus' kingdom, embracing the Atrebates of Hampshire and probably the Dobunni of Gloucestershire, lay in the west. At the time of the Roman invasion of Britain during the reign of Claudius, he led the native resistance against Aulus Plautius (ad 43-47) and, after being defeated, withdrew into south Wales. He was finally defeated by Ostorius Scapula in AD 50, somewhere on the Welsh marches, in the territory of the Ordovices. He himself fled to the Brigantes, whose queen, Cartimandua, delivered him to the Romans. He and his family were featured in a victory parade of Claudius, who granted them pardon and life. -------------------------------------------------- FROM Britannia Internet Magazine, www.britannia.com, Internet. Caratacus. An historical person with some legendary accretions. Caratacus (sometimes spelled Caractacus) was the king of the Catuvellauni at the time of the Roman invasion under the emperor, Claudius, and was the leader of the anti-Roman campaign. His forces suffered several defeats by the Romans and, after a defeat at the hands of the then governor, Ostorious Scapula, in 51 AD, Caratacus retreated to the land of the Brigantes in northern Britain. Unfortunately for Caratacus, Cartimandua, the Queen of the Brigantes, was bound by a client-ruler relationship with the Romans, so she handed Caratacus over to them. Caratacus was sent to Rome along with other captives, where he came to Claudius' attention, according to Tacitus, for his courtesy and bearing and so was pardoned. He and his family were permitted to live out their lives in peace in Italy. Some investigators have come to the conclusion that Caratacus is the historic original for King Arthur, while others insist that he and Arviragus are one and the same.2 |

Caswallon ap Beli1
M, b. ABT 0095 BC, d. 0048 BC
| Birth* | ABT 0095 BC | Britain1 |
| Death* | 0048 BC | 1 |
| Note* | | Caswallon, died about 48 BC. (c) The earliest known historical British king, Caswallon (known to the Romans as Cassivelaunos) was ruler of the Catuvellauni tribe who dominated the lands to the north of the Thames, and most of what is now Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and into Wiltshire. His stronghold was at what is now Wheathamstead. He was evidently a powerful warrior king able to establish himself as the high-king of the British tribes as, before Caesar's invasion of Britain in 55 BC, Caswallon had already attacked the tribe of the Trinovantes in Essex and killed thier king Imanuentius. It is recorded that Caswallon had an army of over 4,000 charioteers let alone infantry. Even these, though, were no match for the Romans. The fact that Caesar was unable to conquer Britain outright says something for the power and determination of the British tribes and of Caswallon as leader. At some stage around 50 or 45 BC he was succeeded by his son Andoco with whom he perhaps showed part of his territory, and subsequently by Tasciovanus, who may have been his son or nephew.2 |

Beli Mawr gan Britain , Duke of Cambria1
M, b. ABT 0130 BC, d. 0072 BC
| Nickname | | Heli, Kamber or Cymyr, Belenos (?)1 |
| Birth* | ABT 0130 BC | Britain1 |
| Death* | 0072 BC | 1 |
| Note* | | Beli (Heli) Mawr(the Great) the 64th King of Britain, born Briton abt. 110 b.c. died 62 b.c. married Don ferch Mathonwy. (c) A semi-legendary British king who was probably an historical ruler, though any facts have become so covered by the dust of myth that it is impossible to be certain about his true basis. Bel was the name of one of the principal Celtic deities, the god of the sun and of light, and it is not surprising that the name would be adopted by later warrior kings, though how much the episodes about Bel in myth are derived from those of a real king of that name (or vice versa) cannot be determined. To have acquired the cognomen Mawr must mean that Beli was a great king and it is likely that he was one of the first to impose his authority over many of the tribes of Britain, most likely over southern Britain and Wales. The Welsh legends make him the father of LUD and Llefelys and possible of Caswallon. Since Caswallon was High King at the time of Caesar's invasion, this would place Beli's existence at the start of the first centruy BC. It is possible to trace most of the British and Welsh rulers back to Beli. Beli (Heli) Mawr Called Belenos by the Romans, was the Celtic God of the Sun, representing the curative powers of the Sun's heat. His festival of Beltane, when bonfires were lit to welcome in the Summer and encourage the Sun's warmth, was held on May 1st, and is remembered in today's May Day festivities. His symbols were the horse (as shown, for example, by the clay horse figurine offerings at Beli's Sainte-Sabine shrine in Burgundy), and also the Wheel (as illustrated on the famous Gundestrup Cauldron). Perhaps, like Apollo, whom he became identified with, Beli was thought to ride the Sun across the sky in a horse-drawn chariot. Indeed, a Celtic model horse and wagon, carrying a gilded sun-disc, has been found at Trundholm in Denmark. Sometimes he is illustrated riding a single horse, throuwing thunder-bolts (hence an occasional idenification with Jupiter) and using his symbolic radiating wheel as a sheild, as he tramples the chthonic forces of a snake-limbed giant. This personification is similar to the classic depiction of the Archangel St. Michael defeating the Devil. Sacred pagan hills associated with Beli, are thought to have had their dedications transferred to this saint (or sometimes St. George) by the early Christians. Well known examples include St. Michael's Mount (Cornwall) and the churches of St. Michael on Brent Tor (Devon), and Burrow Mump and Glastonbury Tor (Somerset): All on a supposed ley line that faces the Rising Sun at Beltane. He may also have been worshipped on Dragon Hill below the great Uffington White Horse in Berkshire.2 |
