Emperor Leo VI 'The Wise' of Byzantium1
M, b. 1 September 866, d. 11 May 912
| Birth* | 1 September 866 | Byzantium1 |
| Marriage* | circa 886 | Principal=Zoë Tzautzina1 |
| Occupation* | between 886 and 912 | Emperor of Byzantium1 |
| Death* | 11 May 912 | 1 |
| Note* | | Leo was recorded to be a son of Basil I the Macedonian and his second wife, Eudokia Ingerina. However, it is regarded that he is the son of Emperor Michael III, as his mother had been this Emperor's mistress. Educated by the patriarch Photius, Leo was more of a scholar than a soldier. In addition to completing the canon of laws, Leo wrote several decrees (novels) dealing with a wide range of ecclesiastical and secular problems. His other works include a funeral panegyric on his father, liturgical poems, sermons and orations, secular poetry, and military treatises. His imperial laws, written in Greek, became the legal code of the Byzantine Empire. Made co-Emperor in 870, he succeeded to the throne on his father's death. His foreign policy was directed mainly against the Arabs and the Bulgars. The able commander Nicephorus Phocas the Elder was recalled from his successful campaigns against the Lombards in south Italy to assist in the Balkans. After Byzantium met with reverses in the West, Sicily was lost to the Arabs in 902, Thessalonica was sacked by Leo of Tripoli, and the Aegean was open to constant attack from Arab pirates. Steps were taken to strengthen the Byzantine navy, which successfully attacked the Arab fleet in the Aegean in 908. But the naval expedition of 911-912 was defeated by Leo of Tripoli. Byzantium's enemy to the north was Simeon, the Bulgar ruler. Hostilities arose out of a trade dispute in 894 and the Byzantines, aided by the Magyars of the Danube-Dnieper region, forced Simeon to agree to a truce. However, in 896 with the help of the nomadic Pechenegs, Simeon took revenge on the Byzantines, forcing them to pay an annual tribute to the Bulgars. During Leo's reign the Russian prince Oleg sailed to Constantinople and in 907 obtained a treaty regulating the position of Russian merchants in Byzantium, which was formally ratified in 911. Because of his anxiety for a male heir Leo married four times, thus incurring the censure of the church.1 |

| Marriage | circa 901 | Wessex, Britain, Principal=Elfleda4,7 |
| Note* | 917 | In 917 the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recorded: "Many people who had been under the rule of the Danes both in East Anglia and in Essex submitted to him; and all the army in East Anglia swore agreement with him, that they would agree to all that he would, and would keep peace with all with whom the king wishes to keep peace, both at sea and on land." Overshadowed by his father Alfred and upstaged by his son Athelstan, it was Edward who reconquered much of England from the Danes (909-919), established an administration for the kingdom of England, and secured the allegiance of Danes, Scots, Britons, and English. Using Alfred's methods and in alliance with Mercia, he spread English influence and control. The Danes of Northumbria were defeated (910) at Tettenhall (in Staffordshire), the Viking kingdom of York acknowledged his power in 918, and most Welsh kings submitted to him. In 921 the submission of not only Viking York and Northumbria but also of the kings of Strathclyde and of the Scots gave his kingdom primacy in the British Isles. Edward was a patient planner, systematic organizer, a bold soldier; by the time he died, he had completed the New Minster at Winchester where he himself was buried. Though twice married, his eldest son and successor, Athelstan, was the son of a mistress.8 |

| Marriage* | 909 | Principal=St. Mathilde von Ringelheim Queen of Germany1 |
| Occupation* | between 912 and 936 | Duke of Saxony, Emperor of Germany6 |
| Note* | | Emperor Conrad I had designated him as his successor and this was supported by the Saxon and Franconian nobility. Although he was the first non-Frank ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, he nevertheless adopted Frankish customs, dress and manners. As he regarded the support of the nobility as sufficient for his position, he refused to be crowned by the bishops. Also, as Duke of Saxony he had shown his independence from Emperor and Church; yet, as Emperor himself, he grew closer to the church. The most serious problem of his reign was the independence of the higher nobility. This had been caused by the disintegration of monarchical powers in the preceeding fifty years. He re-established imperial control over Suabia, Lotharingia and Bavaria. However, in general he allowed the dukes a free hand within their own territories. Several times after 925 he raided the territories of his uncivilized neighbours, the Slavic Wends and the Hungarian Magyars, taking Brandenburg from the Wends and, in 933, defeating the Magyars in battle. Then in the conquered lands he built fortified cities as military strongholds. His rule restored much of the power and prestige of the monarchy so that, before he died, he obtained the recognition of his son, Otto, as his successor.2 |
