King Alfred of Wessex1
M, b. between 846 and 849, d. circa 26 October 899

| Name Variation | | Alfred 'The Great' King of England5 |
| Birth* | between 846 and 849 | Wantage, Dorset, England3 |
| Marriage* | 868 | Principal=St. Ethelswitha3 |
| Occupation* | between 871 and 899 | King of England5 |
| crowned* | 23 April 871 | king of Wessex and Danish Mercia3 |
| Death* | circa 26 October 899 | Winchester?, England3 |
| Burial | | 4 |
| Note* | | Born in 849 in the royal manor of Wantage in Berkshire. Apparently his mother encouraged their learning by showing Alfred and his brothers a beautifully illuminated book of poetry saying the one who could read it first could have it. Alfred, the youngest, was first. As a young man he was his brother King Ethelred's supporter in the struggle against the marauding Vikings. In 868 he married Ealhswith by whom he had a large family. When in 871 he succeeded his brother Ethelwulf as king, most of England was in Danish hands. Even though they won several small victories and, in 875, a seabattle, the Danes had the upper hand. Alfred had to take refuge in 877 and, during this period of not being seen, stories emerged of his being disguised as a wandering minstrel and strolling into Danish camps to gather information. There was also the story of his burning the cakes he had been asked to watch. In May 878, joined by English forces, he drove back the Danes to Chippenham. This was the turning point from which Alfred again emerged as King of England. Twice a year he called a great council which was the beginning of the English Parliament. Apparently Alfred suffered from a strange, regularly re-occurring illness as recorded by Asser, Bishop of Sherborne. According to Sir Iain Moncreiffe of That Ilk, it might have been porphyria. Alfred died 26 October 899 and was buried at Winchester. His wife survived till 5 December 902.5 |

| Marriage* | circa 890 | Principal=Duke Borziwoy I of Bohemia1 |
| Death* | 15 September 927 | murdered1 |
| Note* | | St. Ludmilla and her husband, Borziwoy I, founder of the Bohemian dynasty of Premyslid, entered into the Christian Church. Her religious and political influence over her grandson Wenceslas (Vaclav, Wenzel) angered a semi-pagan party among the nobility and, in 927 during the regency of Wenceslas's mother, Drahomira, Ludmilla was murdered.1 |

| Note* | | The Magyars had lived in the Khazar state north of the Black sea to where they had migrated earlier, probably from the area between the great bend of the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. Around 889, or perhaps a few years earlier, they were defeated and forced to leave their traditional grounds. Their shamanist priests decided on a mass emigration; but first, to pacify their God, Isten "creator of all created things", a sacrifice was needed, a supreme sacrifice. The princes leading the seven tribes chose Almos, the most able and senior amongst them, to be the Chief of all Magyars. Then they opened their veins in their arms and each drank the mingled blood of all and they took five vows. The first was: "As long as they and their progeny after them shall live, their duke and ruler shall always be taken from the House of Almos. Then Duke Almos, as the best possession they had, was a willing and honoured sacrifice to their god Isten. The Magyars then set out under their new leader, Duke Arpad, the son of Almos. After many raiding parties into the area now known as Hungary, they settled there, ethnically and linguistically isolated from their neighbours. These early Magyars had been seven semi-nomadic tribes who associated loosely for offence as well as defence. Consequently they were warlike and bent upon conquest and plunder. Their move to Hungary was under the leadership of Arpad, the first elected chieftain of all the seven tribes. Being semi-nomadic, they considered the Carpathian Basin as only a base for operations. The pastoral section of these tribes would herd their cattle from mountain pastures in summer to milder lowlands in winter. At the same time the more war-like Magyars would maraud from Constantinople to the North Sea, and from southern Italy to the Pyrenees, returning with booty while at the same time leaving behind a resentment resulting in a catastrophic defeat at Augsburg. This was a turning point in the history of Hungary as from then onwards they not only became more settled but began to identify with their adopted country.1 |
