| Residence | circa 1970 | Montreal West, Québec, Canada |
| Death* | 29 March 2000 | Montréal, Québec, Canada, Dee’s Eulogy – 8 April 2000 First I would like to thank all of you who are here today to say good by to Dee Corbett, a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother aunt and friend. We very much appreciate your being with us today to share in our loss and to celebrate her wonderful and long life. Mom’s life spanned a little more than 88 years and throughout that time she met life’s challenges with a positive approach and, of course the right hat. She liked her hats and we thought they suited her well. And. those hats also were sometimes practical. Last Christmas…. Mom enjoyed a happy youth growing up in Shawinigan - the only girl in the family and the apple of her father’s eye. Her education at the Ursuline convent laid the foundation for her strong faith that served her well throughout her life. It was her habit to say her prayers before the end of each day and at the time of her death, she still had her Ursuline prayer book by her side. Even as a young woman she enjoyed community involvement and was quite proud of her time as one of the first senior girl-guide leaders. She also played tennis and was a good piano player. Mom married in 1939, just before dad went overseas. On the whole, Dad was gone for six years but he returned home twice, once in 1941 and again in 1942. Ross, Stuart & I were born in those war years - but that was a difficult way to start a marriage and family. She lived with her Dad in Shawinigan during that time and though he was a tremendous support, I’m sure she said many prayers for the safe return of her loving husband and the father of her three sons. They were blessed. Dad did return. And, they moved back to Quebec City to resume their lives together. Keith was born in 1949 – so now they had four sons. Though the war years were difficult, it provided Mom and Dad with new, life-long friends around which much of my parent’s social life in Quebec City was centered. It also provided Mom with a survival capability that held her in good stead when dad passed away prematurely in 1965 and she had to go it alone. She would advocate that the secret of survival is to keep busy. She combined her social and other skills to make a new and productive life for herself when she moved to Montreal in 1969 where Ross, Stuart and I were working and where Keith, the #4 son, was studying at Loyola. She was very fortunate, I think, to settle here in St Richard’s Parish, Cote St Luc. She loved contributing to organizing the Church Bazaars and working with handicapped children. She also spoke very highly of the camaraderie in her bridge group and delighted in the friendship and artistic endeavors of the St Patrick’s Art group. She made a lot of new and wonderful friends here in Montreal and maintained her lifelong friends that she had in Quebec City. Family also kept Mom busy. For one thing, she never forgot any of her sons’ birthdays or anniversaries or that of her daughters-in-law, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. And she was always ready for a celebration – of which we had many- and she was always ready to help. I would be remiss not to tell you a little about Mom’s dying. Mom was blessed with 88 good years but the last seven weeks of her life weren’t what any of us would have wished for her. Faced with renal failure and a strong desire to live, Mom opted to undergo dialysis treatment – determined that her mental strength and faith in God would see her recover – as she had so many times in the past. While her blood was being treated, she grew weaker instead of stronger and her leg with the damaged circulatory problem got worse. After 5 weeks at St Mary’s Hospital and while the doctors were contemplating the next procedure to save her leg, Mom decided, after consulting with Father Peter, to make sure that this was not a sin against God, that she should stop treatment and “give herself back to God. After 12 more days, she died peacefully. Throughout her hospital stay she had her family around her and she was able to say goodbye to many family and friends who either visited or phoned. Mom greatly appreciated this attention and it helped her very much. In watching my mother go through the dying process, we were witnesses to the power that faith provides at times like these. About a week before she died, a nun told Mom that God chooses those he loves to share His pain so He must love her very much. As sad as Mom was to leave us and as difficult as this relatively short illness was, she never complained about her illness or her pain. Her strength and sense of humor showed throughout the ordeal and she gained the respect of her new friends at St Mary’s Hospital. My brothers and I would agree that God gave us a great mother and now he has taken her back - to be with my father and brother Ross and with her latest great-grandchild Kathryn. Mom said that she was going to seek out a lot of her loved ones when she got to heaven. In life, Mom was successful in achieving most things that she set out to do. She did regret that she couldn’t stay longer – for she loved life and she loved her family and her friends. But, as she told Maria her granddaughter on the phone a few days before she died, “God is calling me – its time for me to go”. So, ‘bye for now Mom and please keep an eye out for us until we are together again. We will miss you greatly. By Bruce Corbett for his mother’s funeral Mass on 8 April 2000.1 |
